Chicken Truck – Doesn’t have to be large as long as it’s a very flashy rig with all the bells and whistles.Dragon Fly – truck that goes slow up the hill then fast down hill.Yard Dog, Yard Mule – Tractor used to move trailers at a terminal, a driver who drives a terminal tractor.Happy Camper, The Griswalds – Recreational Vehicles (RVs) of any kind.Scoot or Hood ornament – a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.Wally World – a Wal-Mart truck, store or dist. ![]() Covered Wagon – Typically a gravel trailer topped with a tarp.this term is also used for heavy stopped or slow traffic. Freightshaker – Any model Freightliner straight truck or tractor (what I drove).Portable Barnyard, Rolling Ranch – Cattle Truck or livestock hauler.Shanty Shaker: Short tractor-only that moves mobile homes.Triples, Trips, Set of trips, wiggle wagons – same as above but with three instead of two.Each trailer usually only has one axle as well. Typically with two 27 foot trailers referred to as “pups”. Doubles, Set of doubles, wiggle wagons – A tractor with two trailers.Day cab – A truck cab without a sleeper berth.Reefer, Cooler or Ice-box – A Reefer is a refrigerated van type of trailer.Just a big old box that can be used to haul all kinds of crap. Box: The most basic trailer also known as a dry-van.Bobtail – Tractor only running without a trailer.Tractor – This is the truck only, not the trailer.BTW the trailer is often referred to as “being pulled” but it is actually “carried” on what’s called a “5th-wheel” Big Truck, Big Rig, Rig, 18-wheeler, Tractor/trailer, Semi – these are common terms for a truck with only one trailer.Sadly most of it has been lost over the years but here a a list of some terms that are still used by the more seasoned drivers.īreaker 1-9: when a trucker says this, he or she is asking permission to break into the conversation other truckers are having on their Citizen Band (CB) radios, on Channel 19 I spent several years driving a tractor trailer across the country and I found out very quickly that it’s not just a job its a way of life that has its own culture, and like with any culture it has its own slang vocabulary. ![]()
